Corona Discharge

Corona Discharge/Corona Effect is an Electrical Discharge caused by the ionization of a fluid such as air surrounding a conductor that is Electrically Charged. The Corona Effect will occur in High Voltage Systems.

Formation Of Corona:

When the potential Gradient is Lesser than 30kv/cm there is no Corona Discharge Formation.  When the Potential Gradient is Greater Than 30kv/cm then the ions atains a sufficiently Higher Velocity and Strikes Each Other and Other Molecule this Produces a New Electron and a Positive Ion Which in Turn they are Accelerated until they Collide with Other Molecules and Produce More Ions.

Highly Ionised Air May Cause Flash Over In The Insulators or Between Phases of Conductors Which Damages the Power Equipments.

Factors Affecting Corona:

  • Atmosphere Conditions

  1. Temperature
  2. Pressure
  3. Dust and Dirt
  4. Rain, Smoke, Smog etc...

  • Electrical Factors:

  1. Frequency
  2. Supply Voltage

  • Effect on Line Conductors

  1. Conductor Spacing
  2. Diameter of Conductor
  3. Shape of Conductor
  4. No of Conductor per Phase
  5. Heating of conductor by Load Current
