Common Types Of Photovoltaic Cells (Solar Cells)

  •  Silicon Solar Cell

Silicon Solar Cells (PV cells) are commonly used as Silicon, is the most abundant element also, silicon has Suitable band gap and silicon is already widely used in electronics industry. Silicon Solar Cells are of two types
    1. Monocrystalline Solar Cells.

Monocrystalline solar cells are manufactured by Czochralski method. These cells are more efficient than polycrystaline cells.
      Monocrystalline and Polycrystalline cells
    2. Polycrystalline Solar Cells.

Polycrystalline Solar cells are manufactured by bridgman process. These cells are 2-3% less efficient than monocrystalline cells.
  • Thin Filim Solar Cell

These Cells Require less energy to be manufactured compare to silicon solar cells, as they require less material for production. They are flexible hence can be used in flexible applications. As Energy required and material required are less , the Energy pay back time is less. But their efficiency is less in comparison to silicon solar cells.

  • Polymer Solar Cell

In this type of solar cells Polymer is used as the active material. These cells can be manufactured quickly, they are thin and flexible, high absorption of light and give lower environmental impact with no usage of toxic elements. But they have low power conversion efficiency and low stability that is it breakdowns when reacted with oxygen and water.
