How A Diesel Locomotive Runs ?

 Most of us might have thought that diesel locomotives works like diesel trucks or cars, If you are one among them, then you are totally wrong.  Diesel Locomotives work as like electric locomotive with a diesel generator, lets see how works in detail.

As trains are long and should pull lots of load, mechanical transmission of power from a IC Engine to wheels may result in irregular load distribution between wheels and there should be a gear for transmission to obtain different speeds and torque. Which increases rolling stocks and decreases efficiency and heavy maintenance.

To avoid this Diesel Locomotives actually uses Electrical Drives as electric locomotive with a Diesel Generator attached to it, which is used to generate electricity in locomotive. In which the power is generated by generators in the rail and is used to drive the locomotive as a electrical locomotive. This method reduces the rolling stocks in the power transfer process hence less maintenance and increase in efficiency.  also it gives even distribution of load to all the wheels.

 

Hybrid Locomotive

And now Many Railways is combining diesel locomotive and electric locomotive hence creating a hybrid locomotive which can run both as a diesel locomotive and as a electric locomotive if the power lines are there in the sector.
